Background of the Study

Attention is a fundamental cognitive resource that significantly influences language processing, particularly in bilingual individuals who must manage multiple linguistic systems. In Yoruba–English bilinguals, the allocation of attentional resources is crucial for effectively switching between languages and suppressing interference. Research shows that heightened attentional control can improve both lexical access and syntactic processing (Olatunji, 2023). Bilingual individuals often exhibit enhanced cognitive flexibility; however, the specific interplay between attention and language processing in Yoruba–English contexts remains underexplored. This study examines the role of attention by using a series of behavioral language tasks—such as lexical decision and sentence comprehension tasks—paired with measures of attentional control, including reaction time and error rate analyses. Neuroimaging techniques, like ERP, may also be employed to investigate the temporal dynamics of attention during language processing. The findings are expected to clarify how attentional mechanisms facilitate efficient language switching and comprehension in bilingual speakers, thereby informing strategies to enhance bilingual education and cognitive training (Adebayo, 2024).

Statement of the Problem

While attention is recognized as vital for bilingual language processing, its specific impact on Yoruba–English speakers is not well understood. Existing studies often generalize from broader bilingual populations, overlooking cultural and linguistic nuances inherent in Yoruba–English interactions. This lack of focused research restricts our ability to develop targeted interventions aimed at improving attentional control and, consequently, language processing in bilingual settings (Olatunji, 2023; Adebayo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To examine the relationship between attentional control and language processing efficiency in Yoruba–English bilinguals.

2. To identify attentional strategies that enhance language switching and comprehension.

3. To propose interventions that improve attention-based language processing.

Research Questions:

1. How does attention influence language processing in Yoruba–English bilinguals?

2. Which attentional factors most significantly impact bilingual language performance?

3. How can targeted interventions enhance attentional control in bilingual contexts?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it reveals the role of attention in facilitating efficient language processing among Yoruba–English bilinguals. Insights from this research will support the development of targeted educational and cognitive training programs that optimize bilingual performance by enhancing attentional control (Olatunji, 2023; Adebayo, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to investigating attention and language processing in Yoruba–English bilinguals using behavioral and neurophysiological assessments.

Definitions of Terms:

• Attention: The cognitive process of focusing on relevant stimuli while filtering out distractions.

• Bilingual Language Processing: The ability to comprehend and produce two languages.

• Cognitive Flexibility: The capacity to switch between different mental tasks or sets.
